There’s no place like Broadway, right? At least that’s what the producers behind Chasing Rainbows: The Road to Oz are banking on. This new musical dives deep into the early life of the legendary Judy Garland, aiming to bring her story to life in a way that resonates with audiences today. Recently, a concert version of the show graced the stage at the National Arts Club in New York City, marking a significant milestone: it’s the first theater, film, or TV property about Garland to receive official endorsement from her estate.
In a heartfelt interview with Deadline, Garland’s daughter, Liza Minnelli, shared her thoughts on the production. “My mother always said her biography is in her music,” Liza, now 72, reflected. “Now, a group of incredibly talented and creative individuals is using that music to tell the story of her early years and her meteoric rise to fame.” Liza went on to express her gratitude, adding, “I’m so grateful and genuinely happy they’re bringing this fascinating chapter of her life to the forefront.”
The show takes audiences back to Garland’s humble beginnings as Frances Gumm, performing in vaudeville alongside her sisters, Mary Jane and Dorothy. It then follows her journey to becoming a Hollywood sensation through her unforgettable role in The Wizard of Oz. If the production makes its way to Broadway, fans can expect to hear timeless classics like “Over the Rainbow,” bringing Garland’s magic to life once again.
