Back in 2015, Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid were engaged. They called it off but got back together a year later. Recently, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Courteney shared that she feels uneasy using the term "partner" to describe Johnny. This is because, where she hails from—Alabama—the word "partner" carries a different connotation.

"He’s my partner. That’s what he calls it, my partner. But I’m from Alabama, so you don’t really say partner unless you’re in a same-sex relationship," the 54-year-old actress explained. "He’s my guy, he’s my one, but saying partner’s difficult for me." It's clear that Courteney's upbringing has shaped how she perceives language, and this particular term doesn't resonate with her the way it might for others.

A Moment of Misunderstanding

Courteney recounted an incident in Atlanta when someone assumed she was in a same-sex relationship because of her choice of words. "I was in Atlanta not that long ago and I was like, 'Oh, I’m supposed to meet my partner in section F,' and they were like, 'Oh, I’m sure she’s going to be there, don’t worry about it,'" Courteney recalled. "It’s not that it matters, but it’s just a different way to speak." This moment highlights how language can lead to misunderstandings, especially when cultural or regional differences come into play.

Labels Don't Define Their Love

For Courteney and Johnny, labels have never been a priority. When they attended the Irish Arts Center Spirit of Ireland Gala in NYC in October 2018, the event referred to Courteney as being there with her husband. Johnny later clarified to People that the words "husband" or "wife" are just "a label" to them. At that time, Courteney added that she and Johnny were "not married" but said that she’s "married in my heart." It’s clear that their connection goes beyond traditional definitions.
