Dr. Oz Shares Heartwarming Stories About Being "Runka" To His Grandkids

Let me tell you about Dr. Mehmet Oz, or as his three grandkids lovingly call him, “Runka.” It’s a name that originated from his daughter Daphne Oz’s eldest child, Philomena, who decided he needed a special nickname. “Everyone had a name but me,” Dr. Oz revealed to Closer Weekly in a recent issue. “Then one day, Philomena called me Runka, and I embraced it!”

Being a Grandfather: The Ultimate Joy

For Dr. Oz, being “Runka” to Philo, 4, Jovan, 3, and Domenica, 13 months, is the most fulfilling role in his life right now. “Being a grandfather is an incredible experience,” the 58-year-old television personality shared. “You get to witness the joy you once felt as a father through your child, creating a multiplier effect. Not only do you enjoy the happiness of your grandkids, but you also have the best part—you can give them back!”

Regrets and Redo: A Second Chance

Back in the day, Dr. Oz was a busy young surgeon who missed many pivotal moments in the early lives of his four children. Reflecting on those days, he admitted, “I spent so much time wishing I had done things differently. Now, as a grandfather, I have a second chance, a redo if you will.”

Dr. Oz treasures the moments he spends with his grandchildren, whether it’s reading them stories, playing ball, or engaging in imaginative games. He uses these moments to teach them valuable lessons. “Think about the values they need and how you can play with them to reinforce those,” he advised. “It’s about equipping them with the tools to handle both failure and success.”

Dr. Oz strongly believes that grandchildren shouldn’t be handed victories they haven’t earned. “I love setting up competitions—like a pirate treasure hunt,” he admitted after speaking at the Beacon Awards in NYC. “I want them to face and overcome failure.” His ultimate goal is to teach his grandkids to fall, rise, and try again. “I want them to understand that the real joy in life comes from overcoming obstacles,” he explained. “If they grasp that one lesson from me, I’ll feel like I’ve done my job well.”
