What Jennifer Garner thought would be a delightful mother-son date turned into a slightly puzzling experience for her six-year-old son, Samuel. The actress from Peppermint recently took her little boy to see the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) perform the classic The Nutcracker. This outing, which was meant to be filled with holiday cheer, instead left Samuel scratching his head. Garner shared this amusing tale during her speech at ABT’s holiday benefit on Monday, December 17.
Recalling the moment, Jen told the audience, “He looked over and he said, ‘Mom, I don’t know if I get this movie. I’m not really getting the plot. They are not talking.’” It’s moments like these that remind us how differently kids interpret the world around them.
After taking ballet lessons as a child, Jennifer Garner developed a deep appreciation for the art form. This passion eventually turned into a lifelong admiration for the NYC-based ballet company, the American Ballet Theatre. During the special event, she expressed her heartfelt sentiments, saying, “It is my lifelong dream to be up here celebrating the American Ballet Theatre.”

She playfully added, “And lucky for you, I will not be dancing tonight. But that’s my holiday gift.” Her words were met with laughter and applause from the audience, showcasing her charm and wit.
Although she wasn’t performing on stage, Jennifer Garner was certainly present behind the scenes. Before the The Nutcracker performance, she took to Instagram to share a delightful video of herself multitasking in various roles. She played stage manager, makeup artist, hairstylist, costume inspector, and even dressing room decorator. The Alias alum didn’t stop there; she also waved a foam finger in the crowd while dressed in a marching band costume, bringing a touch of whimsy to the evening.
“Thank you to all of the @abtofficial dancers and crew for letting me play along — I was in heaven being with all of you,” she wrote in the caption. “Even more — I loved every minute of #ABTNutcracker @segerstromarts. @mistyonpointe was the dreamiest Clara. Alabama’s finest, @mbhoven, was the most regal prince.”
