She’s not just the Duchess of Cambridge—Kate Middleton is also a hands-on mom juggling royal duties with raising her family. During her visit to Leicester University on November 28, 2018, she revealed something surprisingly relatable about herself. Despite her polished public image, Kate admitted she struggles with languages and hopes her children won’t follow in her footsteps.
Speaking candidly during the event, the 36-year-old duchess joked about her language skills—or lack thereof. “I have to make sure my children are better than me; that’s my goal,” she said, referring to her three kids: Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and baby Prince Louis, who was just six months old at the time. This light-hearted moment came after an encounter with a fan where Kate tried to practice her Italian.
It all started when a woman named Debbie introduced herself in Italian during a video posted by Greta Tamošaitytė on Instagram. Kate responded warmly, “Very nice to meet you. How about we say, ‘Ciao’? I’m trying to practice my languages, but I’m so bad at it.” Debbie quickly reassured her, saying she sounded “perfect,” prompting Kate to quip about her children’s linguistic future. With a smile, she added, “I need to make sure they’re better than me.”

While Kate may struggle with languages, it seems her daughter Princess Charlotte already has a head start. Thanks to the family’s Spanish nanny, Maria Turrion Borrallo, Charlotte reportedly speaks some Spanish. According to People magazine, the bubbly princess is known for being both confident and polite. A source close to the family shared, “She’s always chatting away, so polite, but also fun and energetic. She has beautiful manners.”
Kate has always been open about the challenges of motherhood, which makes her comments even more relatable. In a heartfelt speech in March 2017, she spoke about the emotional rollercoaster that comes with raising children. “Becoming a mother has been such a rewarding and wonderful experience, but it’s also been a huge challenge,” she confessed. “Even for someone like me, who has support at home that most mothers don’t have, nothing can fully prepare you for the overwhelming experience of becoming a mom.”
She went on to describe the whirlwind of emotions new mothers face. “It’s a mix of joy, exhaustion, love, and worry—all rolled into one. Your entire identity changes overnight. Suddenly, you’re no longer just an individual; you’re a mother first and foremost.”
It’s clear that Kate is doing an incredible job balancing her royal duties with her role as a mother. If George, Charlotte, and Louis grow up to be half as amazing as their mom, they’ll be just fine!
