Martha Stewart, the queen of crafting and all things domestic, is thriving more than ever. Whether she’s whipping up creative projects or teaming up with Snoop Dogg on Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, Martha remains an icon in the world of lifestyle entertainment. But let’s not forget, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Martha. A couple of years ago, this 77-year-old powerhouse found herself behind bars.
Back in 2004, Martha faced some serious legal trouble. She was convicted of felony charges, including conspiracy, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and making false statements to federal investigators. The verdict handed her a five-month sentence in a federal correctional facility, followed by two years of supervised release. Yes, Martha has a mugshot. And with it having been almost two decades since that tumultuous period, Martha decided to open up about her time in prison during a candid conversation with Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg on their podcast, Skimm’d from The Couch.
Martha shared her thoughts on her unique stint in the correctional system with an honesty that’s both refreshing and inspiring. “I had a legal problem that no one could foresee or anticipate,” she explained. “I didn’t do anything wrong… and when I write about it, you’ll understand. I survived it very well because I followed my own advice: ‘Don’t let it get you down. You’re better than this. The people responsible aren’t good people. Forget about it.’”

Martha isn’t just reminiscing about her experiences; she’s planning to document them for future generations. “If I don’t write a book, my grandchildren, if I ever have any, will never know what grandma did in her life because catering is so fleeting,” she revealed on the podcast. “You prepare a meal, and the moment it’s eaten, it’s gone. I wanted to ensure that I recorded my ideas and the beautiful recipes.” Think of it as a culinary memoir with a side of life lessons.
Now, let’s talk about something that might interest Snoop Dogg’s fans. When asked about her views on marijuana, Martha was straightforward yet open-minded. “I don’t smoke,” she admitted. “I’m allergic to smoke. I hate smoke. But that doesn’t mean I’m not fascinated by marijuana and its byproducts, like CBDs. Recently, I joined the board of Canopy Growth Corporation in Canada, the first cannabis company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It’s the future of pharmaceuticals, and that’s how I see it.”
All we heard was, “I’m intrigued by marijuana.” If you’re curious to hear more of Martha’s thoughts, you can listen to the full podcast episode right here.
