Melissa Rivers Reflects On Mother Joan Rivers' Legacy And Her Son's Future
It’s been over four years since the untimely passing of comedy legend Joan Rivers, but her spirit lives on through her daughter, Melissa Rivers. In an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, Melissa opened up about how her mother's legacy continues to influence her life, particularly through her son, Cooper Endicott, who just turned 18. “When I look at Cooper, I see my mom in him,” Melissa revealed. “He’s sharp, witty, and compassionate—a perfect blend of everything that made my mom so special. I often wonder, ‘Where did this kid get all these amazing qualities?’”
Despite the heartache of losing her mother, Melissa finds solace in seeing her son grow into such a remarkable young man. “Cooper is the embodiment of everything Joan stood for—intelligence, humor, and kindness,” she added, her voice filled with pride. “He’s truly a reflection of her legacy, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Cooper’s Path: No Plans for Showbiz… Yet
While Melissa has carved out a successful career in entertainment, including hosting the LA Museum of the Holocaust’s gala, she shared that Cooper has no immediate plans to follow in her footsteps. “He’s not interested in show business right now, and that’s perfectly fine with me,” Melissa said with a laugh. “When I was his age, I didn’t know what I wanted to do either. Life has a way of surprising you, though.”

With Cooper preparing to head off to college next year, Melissa reflected on her own journey. “I discovered my passion during my college years. I fell in love with creating and entertaining. For some people, it’s just who they are—it’s part of their DNA. Who knows? Maybe Cooper will find his calling in the same way.”
Preparing for the Empty Nest
As Melissa, now 50, braces herself for the inevitable reality of an empty nest, she admitted it’s bittersweet. “It’s going to be a mix of emotions—sadness, pride, loneliness, fear, and maybe even a little panic,” she confessed. “But I know Cooper is excited about this next chapter, and that gives me comfort.”
Although she’s trying to stay strong, Melissa admitted to using humor as a coping mechanism. “I’ve been teasing Cooper throughout the college application process,” she joked. “I keep telling him, ‘Hey, when you pick your schools, let’s talk because I’ve always wanted to get my master’s degree. Maybe we can do it together!’”

Pranking Cooper: A Family Tradition
While Melissa isn’t seriously considering going back to school, she couldn’t resist getting a rise out of her son. “It worked! He was genuinely panicked for longer than he should have been,” she laughed. “Parenting tip: Instill just enough doubt and fear in your kids to keep them on their toes. It’s all in good fun, of course.”
Apparently, teasing and embarrassing your kids is a family tradition, and Melissa hopes Cooper continues it with his own children someday. “When he has kids, I hope he carries on this great tradition of torturing and embarrassing them,” she joked. “It’s all about balance, right?”
As Melissa prepares to send her baby off to college next fall, fans are eager to see where Cooper ends up. While it’s hard to let go, Melissa remains optimistic about the future. “This is such an exciting time for him, and I’m so proud of the person he’s becoming.”
