There’s something poetic about the idea that Sally Field, the iconic star of Flying Nun, has seemingly chosen a life of solitude. At a recent Live Talks LA event, Sally opened up about her new memoir, In Pieces, revealing that she’s content with her current state of independence. “I don’t even try anymore,” she said with a laugh. “I’m really happy with who I am. I don’t want to wake up to someone else’s laundry or worry about what they had for dinner last night.”
In her later years, Sally has come to terms with the fact that she no longer feels the need to search for a partner. After two marriages and subsequent divorces, she’s learned that constantly seeking love can sometimes lead to more heartache than happiness. “I’ve spent so much of my life looking for love,” Sally admitted. “But now, I’m trying to break that cycle. I’m examining the patterns that kept me stuck in relationships that weren’t right for me.”
For Sally, being alone doesn’t equate to loneliness. In fact, she finds immense joy in her solitude. “Aloneness might sound scary at first,” she explained, “but it’s actually liberating. When you’re comfortable in your own skin, when you truly own who you are, you’re never really alone. You’re in great company with yourself.”

Sally’s journey to self-acceptance hasn’t been without its challenges. One of the most significant relationships in her life was with Burt Reynolds, her on-and-offscreen partner from 1977 to 1982. “Burt was a huge part of my life for a long time,” she reminisced. “He pushed me in ways that no one else ever had, and I like to think I did the same for him. We were catalysts for each other’s growth.”
Though their relationship ended nearly four decades ago, Burt’s passing in September of last year, just days before the release of In Pieces, brought back a flood of memories for Sally. “I’m relieved that he never got the chance to read the book,” she confessed in another interview. “It would’ve hurt him, and I didn’t want to cause him any more pain than I already had.”
Even if Sally never embarks on another romantic relationship, she’s found fulfillment in other areas of her life. “I’ve discovered a new kind of love,” she shared. “I’ve always struggled with finding romantic partners, but now, I’ve found love in my children and my work. That
