Alright, let’s get right to it. Everyone’s favorite question: Is Julie Andrews going to make an appearance in Mary Poppins Returns? Let’s face it, when it comes to movies tied to Julie’s legacy, Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music are at the top of the list. The 1964 Disney classic Mary Poppins is practically synonymous with Julie Andrews, so it’s only natural that fans would assume she’d have some kind of role in the sequel. But guess what? She’s not going to be in it. Not even a quick cameo. And let me tell you, there’s a good reason for that.
Director Rob Marshall recently opened up to Entertainment Weekly about the decision. He said, “Julie knew we were working on this project, and when we told her we were doing it, she said, ‘Oh, thank God!’ And then when we mentioned Emily Blunt as our choice for Mary Poppins, she just threw her hands up in the air and said, ‘Yes!’ Honestly, a lot of people feel the same way about Emily’s incredible talent.”
Now, let’s hear from Emily Blunt herself. In an interview with Variety, she shared her thoughts on Julie’s involvement—or lack thereof—in the new film. “Julie was very hands-off throughout the entire process. There were discussions about her possibly making a cameo, but she was incredibly generous and understanding. She told Rob, ‘Do you know what this is? This is Emily’s version of Mary Poppins. I don’t want her to feel like she’s playing Mary Poppins the whole time, and then I come in and it’s like, ‘Oh, but there’s the real Mary Poppins.’”

Julie herself had plenty to say about the matter in an interview with Beyond The Stage. “I admire Emily so much. It’s amazing that she’s the new Mary Poppins. This new movie isn’t a remake—it’s an entirely new film based on the other stories. I genuinely wish her all the best. I admire her, I’ve met her, and she’s just lovely.” She also told Hollywood Life, “I’m letting them do their thing. It’s Emily’s responsibility now. My time was mine, and this is a fresh take. My version was 50 years ago, and that’s mind-blowing.”
“For me and for everyone else, Julie Andrews will always be the most incredible Mary Poppins. She won an Oscar for it and burst onto the scene in such a remarkable way,” Rob Marshall added. “But Emily is the perfect person to carry the torch forward, and I know Julie feels exactly the same way. She truly loves Emily.”
Mary Poppins Returns hits theaters on December 19, and trust me, it’s going to be a magical ride. Emily Blunt is stepping into some pretty big shoes, but with her talent and charm, she’s bound to leave her own mark on the iconic character.
