Downton Abbey: What’s Next For The Crawleys In The New Film?

When Downton Abbey wrapped its final episode back in 2016, fans around the world were left with a mix of nostalgia and longing. The show had given us six seasons of drama, romance, and history, and while the Crawley family and their loyal servants seemed to have found their happy endings, it wasn’t enough. Thankfully, the world of Downton isn’t done with us yet. In the fall of 2019, a theatrical release is set to pick up the story, this time in the autumn of 1927, just 18 months after the series finale. Here’s what Closer has uncovered about the highly anticipated film.

Lady Mary Finds Her Match, But Challenges Lie Ahead

Lady Mary Crawley, portrayed by the talented Michelle Dockery, has had her fair share of romantic trials and tribulations over the years. But after all that, she’s finally found love in the arms of Henry Talbot, a race car driver who seems to be her perfect match. According to Michelle, "They’re very supportive of one another and they’re good friends. It’s nice to see Mary in that way as opposed to being in constant turmoil about her love life." While it seems like Lady Mary’s personal life is finally on track, her role in Downton is about to become more critical than ever. Michelle adds, "There’s a sense of Mary holding it all together," suggesting that the estate may face new challenges that require her leadership and strength.

Lady Edith Steps Into a New Role

Younger sister Lady Edith, who finally found love and happiness by marrying Bertie, the 7th Marquess of Hexham, is stepping into a new chapter of her life. Her transition to a wealthier and more distinguished household is bound to be challenging. "It brings with it much more responsibility and protocol than she was raised with at Downton," director Michael Engler revealed to Entertainment Weekly. Edith’s journey into this new world will undoubtedly test her adaptability and resilience, making her storyline one to watch.

Tom Branson, the widower of Lady Sybil, moved to the United States with their daughter, Sybbie, after the series finale. Could love finally be on the horizon for him? Allen Leech, who plays the former chauffeur, teased, "Given the fact that he is one of the only ones left who hasn’t found love, one would hope and assume there is an opportunity for him to have an iota of a chance at finding something." Fans are crossing their fingers that Tom’s story will take a romantic turn in the film.

    Carson Returns to Downton

Carson, the estate’s beloved butler, retired due to palsy at the end of the series, but he’s back for the film. "Let’s just say that his brief retirement has been very good for his health," Engler shared. Played by the incomparable Jim Carter, Carson’s return promises to bring a comforting sense of continuity to the film, reminding viewers of the heart and soul of Downton Abbey.

Lady Violet: Still Sharp as Ever

And who could forget the indomitable Lady Violet? Played by the legendary Maggie Smith, the Dowager Countess remains as sharp-tongued and witty as ever. "She represents the oldest of the old guard," Engler noted. In the film, she delivers a line that perfectly encapsulates her timeless wisdom: "One must have standards, but one must not be inflexible." It’s this balance that has always defined Lady Violet, and her presence in the film will no doubt bring both humor and insight to the unfolding drama.
