Reliving the Magic: Original Cast Members Share Hilarious Memories

Let’s be real for a second: If you ever thought Hee Haw was just a fun show to watch, well, you haven’t heard anything yet! To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this iconic series, Closer Weekly caught up exclusively with some of the original cast members—Jana Jae, Lulu Roman, Misty Rowe, and Buck Trent—in their latest issue (available on newsstands now!). These legends spilled all the tea about their favorite memories, behind-the-scenes antics, and what it was really like being part of this legendary comedy.

Take Lulu Roman, for example. At 72 years young, she reminisced about her all-time favorite skit, Lulu’s Truck Stop. “Not only did we get to eat during filming, but it was basically me throwing food at everyone!” she laughed. But not every moment was a laugh riot. Lulu also shared a memory that stood out as both the best and worst: the Kornfield. “We would jump on apple boxes during rehearsals, and by day four, honey, everyone was mad because their legs were so sore,” she confessed. It’s clear that the cast gave it their all, even if it meant a little physical pain.

The Cast’s Favorite Behind-the-Scenes Shenanigans

Now, let’s talk about Junior Samples, the guy in overalls who always seemed to have a way with words—and moonshine. “He had a jug with real moonshine and would say, ‘Hi, everybody! Want a swig?’” remembered fiddler Jana Jae, now 75 years old. But the fun didn’t stop there. Gailard Sartain, the man responsible for the countdown before shooting scenes, had a knack for making everyone laugh. “About the time he got to three, he always made people crack up—usually with a cough and a fart noise!” Lulu shared with a hearty chuckle.

The show’s legendary guest stars also left their mark on the cast. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, for instance, had a dynamic that everyone noticed. “They sparred off-camera—Dale was definitely the boss!” Jana revealed. Meanwhile, Buck Trent, who’s now 80, was thoroughly impressed by Dolly Parton. “She could write a classic song in five minutes flat!” he exclaimed. And when it came to Dolly’s long-lasting marriage? Buck had an insider scoop: “Carl [Dean] stays home because he found out quick that people are going to bump him out of the way to talk to Dolly!”
