Let’s give it up for Glenn Close, folks! The incredibly talented 71-year-old actress walked away with the prestigious Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama award at the 2019 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 6. Glenn took the stage and delivered a speech that resonated with everyone in the room—and everyone watching at home. “Thank you so much, Hollywood Foreign Press. This is such a tremendous honor. I am truly humbled to be standing here with my fellow nominees, my incredible category sisters. We’ve already started getting to know one another, and I can’t wait to spend even more time together. Each of you has brought something extraordinary to the screen this year. Honestly, we should all be up here together. That’s all I can say,” Glenn said, referring to her fellow nominees—Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), Nicole Kidman (Destroyer), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), and Rosamund Pike (A Private War).

Glenn then went on to share a deeply personal story. “Oh my God, I just can’t believe this is happening! It took 14 years to make this film—it was called The Wife, and I think that’s probably why it took so long to get made. But here we are. Playing a character like this is so internal, so nuanced. I can’t help but think of my mom, who spent her entire life sublimating herself to my dad. Even in her 80s, she once told me, ‘I feel like I haven’t accomplished anything.’ That just broke my heart. Through this whole experience, I’ve learned something important. Women, we’re nurturers by nature. We raise our children, support our husbands or partners if we’re lucky enough to have them. But we also need to find personal fulfillment. We need to follow our dreams. We need to say to ourselves, ‘I can do this, and I deserve the opportunity to do it,’” she continued.

Wrapping up her speech, Glenn said, “When I was a little girl, I felt like Muhammad Ali, who knew he was destined to be a boxer. I felt like I was destined to be an actress. I grew up watching those early Disney films, Hayley Mills movies, and I thought, ‘I can do that.’ And here I am today—this September will mark 45 years of me being a working actress. I truly can’t imagine a better life. Thank you so much.” Congrats once again, Glenn, on your incredible achievement!
