Let’s just cut to the chase: Julie Andrews, the original Mary Poppins herself, has officially given her blessing to Mary Poppins Returns. Yup, you heard that right. The legendary star of the 1964 Disney masterpiece has seen the sequel and is absolutely thrilled with it. "She’s seen it, she said, 'I loved it' in huge capital letters, and the email that she sent was literally, I can’t tell you how long [it was]," director Rob Marshall told the Press Association. At 83 years young, Julie didn’t hold back when it came to praising the new film.
Now, if you're wondering what exactly Julie had to say about the movie, well, let me break it down for you. According to Rob, Julie was nothing short of ecstatic. "She said Emily was wonderful, she loved her voice, she loved every single person in the cast. She was just over the moon about the whole thing," Rob revealed. It’s safe to say that Julie found the movie nothing short of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious—yes, I went there!
Unlike Julie’s former co-star Dick Van Dyke, who made a cameo appearance in Mary Poppins Returns, Julie decided to let Emily Blunt take center stage. Instead of joining the cast, Julie chose to sit back, relax, and enjoy the film when it hit theaters in December 2018. During an interview with Variety, Emily mentioned that Julie was “very hands-off with the whole thing.”

Emily went on to explain that there were discussions about Julie making an appearance in the movie. But Julie, being the gracious person she is, stepped aside to allow Emily to shine. "There was discussion that maybe she would come and do a bit in the movie, and she was so generous, actually," Emily recalled. Julie reportedly told Rob Marshall, "Do you know what this is? This is Emily’s version of her and I don’t want it to be that she’s playing Mary Poppins the whole way through, but then I come in and there’s, like, oh, but there’s the real Mary Poppins." Now, that’s what I call class!
