Let’s be real for a second—by now, pretty much everyone on the planet has seen Netflix’s mega-hit, Bird Box. It was one of those films that took the world by storm, with its haunting premise and unforgettable performances. But what you might not know is that behind the scenes, things were just as extraordinary. Filming a movie where most of the cast is blindfolded? Yeah, that sounds like a challenge. But Sandra Bullock, the star of the show, decided to bring some holiday cheer into the mix by treating everyone to a little surprise.
Danielle Macdonald, who played Olympia in the thriller, recently opened up about Sandra’s generosity during an interview with Variety. She revealed that Sandra, now 54, went above and beyond to make the set feel festive, especially since they were filming during the holiday season in 2017. “I’m in complete awe of how organized Sandy is,” Danielle shared. “Because we were filming during the holidays, she set up this little station in the house where everyone could celebrate their own traditions. It was like a mini-global celebration, with space for everyone to share their unique traditions. And then, out of nowhere, she had gifts for all of us! I was like, ‘How are you this prepared?’”
Danielle went on to describe how Sandra managed to balance her demanding role as both a working mom and a leading actress. “And then she had her kids, and they were all taken care of. I was like, ‘You woke up this morning, took your kids to school, and now you’re at work all day, and you’re the lead of this movie—you’re in every single frame!’” Danielle marveled. “I don’t know how she does it, because I can barely handle just the work part. She’s like an alien, in the best way possible.” Sandra’s ability to juggle her responsibilities while maintaining her professionalism is nothing short of extraordinary, and it’s no wonder her co-stars were left in awe.

But let’s not forget, filming Bird Box wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. Sandra herself admitted in a recent promotional interview that the experience wasn’t always enjoyable. “It wasn’t fun,” she confessed. “But I liked the fact that it did half the work for you. I didn’t have the luxury of being comfortable, and that helped. I didn’t realize that my crabbiness and irritability were stemming from the fact that I was not with my usual superpowers, which are your crutches as an actor.”
