Kate Middleton's College Days: Hockey, Confidence, And Royal Choices

When you look at Kate Middleton today, you might not guess that she was once a fierce hockey player in her younger years. But believe it or not, that's exactly what she was doing during her college days. And it turns out, her experience at Marlborough College is what’s reportedly influencing her decision to send Prince George there as well.

Marlborough College: Where Kate Became a Confident Duchess

Back in 1996, Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge, joined Marlborough College midway through the academic year. She transferred from Downe House, an all-girls boarding school, where she had faced some teasing from fellow students. At Marlborough, Kate found a new environment where she could truly thrive. Joan Gall, her tutor at the time, recalled their first meeting, saying, "When she arrived, she was very quiet. Coming into a big school like Marlborough was difficult, but she settled in quickly." Joan added, "It was like a big, happy family. We would do things like bake cakes and watch videos together."

Athletic Achievements: More Than Just Hockey

According to the Daily Mail, Kate wasn’t just a regular member of the school’s hockey team—she was also joint captain of the tennis team. She was involved in a variety of sports, including swimming, high jump, and netball. Housemistress Ann Patching had this to say about young Kate: "Catherine was able to settle in very easily. She got involved in school life and loved sport and music." Classmate Kathryn Solari remembered how kind and considerate Kate was. "Catherine was always really sweet and lovely. She treated everybody alike. She was a good girl and quite preppy—she always did the right thing—and she was very sporty. I wouldn’t say she was the brightest button, but she was very hard-working."

  • Another friend, Gemma, chimed in, noting that Kate was all about her studies. "Catherine wasn’t much of a party animal. A group of us used to sneak off to Reading to go drinking, but she would never join us." Gemma continued, "Kate was known for working very hard and took A-levels in chemistry, biology, and art in 2000, achieving two As and a B." Kate eventually moved on to St Andrews University, where she met Prince William, and the rest, as they say, is history.

It’s no secret that Kate is considering Marlborough College for Prince George’s education. The school played a significant role in shaping her into the confident woman she is today, and it’s easy to see why she’d want the same for her son. Of course, George is only 5 years old, so there’s plenty of time for Kate and William to make their decision.
