Back in 1999, as Dudley Moore was approaching his 64th birthday, something truly remarkable happened. At the time, Dudley was battling progressive supranuclear palsy, a challenging condition that had cast a shadow over his life. His dear friend Barbara Paskin decided to do something special to lift his spirits. She reached out to Dudley's former co-stars and friends, asking them to send messages of love and encouragement. What happened next was nothing short of miraculous.
Barbara, who authored the heartfelt book Dear Dudley: A Celebration of the Much-Loved Comedy Legend, shared her experience. “We received a parody of The Beatles’ iconic song ‘When I’m Sixty-Four’ by none other than Paul McCartney,” she recalled. “And that was just the beginning. Heartfelt notes poured in from the likes of Elton John, Bette Midler, Whoopi Goldberg, Jack Lemmon, Mel Brooks, Michael Caine, and so many more. By the time we gathered all the letters, they filled two massive albums. Dudley was deeply moved, overwhelmed by the outpouring of love.”
Barbara revealed that she managed to contact nearly 300 celebrities, simply sharing that Dudley was unwell and about to celebrate his birthday. “I was utterly amazed by the overwhelming response,” Barbara expressed in an article for the Daily Mail on Nov. 18. “For months, letters came pouring in from all corners of the world, each filled with loving messages and words of comfort for the man who had brought so much joy through his music and humor.” Her efforts paid off in spades. “It was truly extraordinary that so many people would take the time to write to me,” Dudley once remarked, clearly touched by the gesture.
