Michelle Obama Reveals The Hilarious Reason Barack Wanted A Second Term

As the memoir Becoming by Michelle Obama continues to soar in sales—earning the title of 2018’s best-selling book—the former First Lady keeps surprising fans with new stories from her White House days during President Barack Obama's administration. Recently, she sat down with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, where she revealed the surprising truth behind her husband’s determination to secure a second term.

Michelle Shares the Real Reason Behind Barack’s Desire for a Second Term

Michelle, now 54, chatted with Fallon about a variety of topics, ranging from her memoir's success to the disaster drills she and her brother used to practice when they were younger. But it was when the conversation turned to her daughters, 20-year-old Malia and 17-year-old Sasha, that Michelle really opened up about why Barack was so passionate about securing another four years in the White House.

“I’ve always said, though it’s not often talked about, the second term of the presidency was heavily influenced by Barack’s desire to keep the girls under Secret Service protection through their teenage years,” Michelle joked. She added, “He was like, ‘We’ve got to win, because I don’t want those girls walking around unsupervised.’”

Michelle also shared that her daughters are now fully immersed in typical young adult experiences, calling them “really interesting” and noting that they’ve grown into great friends. “They’re living their lives, and there are boyfriends we can talk about,” Michelle said with a smile. “They drive, they earn their own money, and they ask for less. It’s been an adjustment, but a good one.”

This isn’t the first time Michelle has shared a funny story involving her daughters. She previously revealed that she and Malia once attempted to sneak out of the White House, only to be stopped by a locked door and the reality of being on national television.

Michelle recounted the story to Ellen DeGeneres, saying, “Malia was all pumped up, like, ‘We’re going to do this, Mom, you get out, you get out.’ But the door was locked, and the usher said, ‘Ma’am, if you walk out there, you’ll be on camera in front of the nation.’” She laughed, adding, “I was in ripped-up shorts and a T-shirt, no shoes, no makeup, and I thought, hmm, you have a point. I don’t want to be on that clip looking like this.” Of course, Michelle and Malia eventually made it out to celebrate the legalization of gay marriage with everyone else.
