Why Chip Gaines Revealed His True Feelings About Fixer Upper's End

Listen, I know this might hit close to home for some of you. The beloved Fixer Upper star, Chip Gaines, has opened up about why he eventually started feeling trapped by the show that brought so much joy to millions. In a candid interview with Cowboys & Indians for their January 2019 cover, Chip shared, “Toward the end of the Fixer Upper journey, I felt caged, trapped.” He went on to say, “Breaking out of that has been liberating,” referring to the show's cancellation after Season 5.

Now, take a moment to let that sink in. If you're anything like me, your jaw might have hit the floor. Back in September 2017, Chip, then 44, and his wife and co-star, Joanna Gaines, announced that the incredibly popular reality show wouldn't be returning for a sixth season. Almost a year later, in November 2018, the power couple surprised fans by revealing they were jumping back into television with their very own cable network. Let's just say, it's been quite the rollercoaster for Fixer Upper fans!

The Real Reason Behind the Show's End

Looking back, it all starts to make sense. The Gaines couple had their reasons for wrapping up Fixer Upper, even though saying goodbye wasn't easy. “TV was a funny thing for me. I’m an authentic, sincere person,” Chip confessed to the magazine, before the network deal was announced. “But the more staged something becomes, or the more required something becomes, it boxes me up. Jo and I just couldn’t figure it out.”

Chip explained how being told how to act on camera was something he simply couldn't handle. “Sure, you're having fun, right? But imagine if I put a camera in your face and said, ‘Hey, say something funny.’ Or if I put a camera in your face and said, ‘Hey, be smart.’ I just struggled with that environment. Especially as time went on.”

    From Bliss to Business

Chip revealed that things weren't always this way. “In the beginning, it was pure fun. The first three years of Fixer Upper were some of the best years of my life. The last two years, while we still look back fondly on them, they felt more like a job.”

    Exciting New Ventures

With Fixer Upper now a fond memory, the couple is ready to explore new opportunities. “Jo and I are both just kinda giddy, just like, ‘Man, what’s the future look like and what’s the next step?’ Because we’re both business people, and that’s fundamentally who we are,” Chip said during their announcement on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
