Emily Blunt On Singing, Mary Poppins Returns, And Why She Needs Tequila To Perform

Even though Emily Blunt’s role in Mary Poppins Returns is packed with musical numbers, the actress recently confessed that she’s not exactly a fan of singing in front of people. Despite her dazzling performances on-screen, Emily revealed to the Herald Sun that belting out tunes in front of a crowd isn’t as easy as it might seem. “I much prefer singing alone in the car, in the shower, or by myself at home,” she explained. “I was never the type of person at a party who would want to sing in front of others.”

Now, you might be thinking, “But she’s Emily Blunt! She’s a Hollywood star!” And you’d be right—she is. But even big-name celebrities have their quirks. Emily admitted that if she ever does find herself in a karaoke situation, there’s one thing that helps her loosen up: tequila. “Even in karaoke, I need a lot of tequila to do it,” she joked. So, the next time you’re at a karaoke bar and someone hands her a mic, you’ll know what’s really going on behind the scenes.

Why Singing Is So Personal for Emily

For Emily, who’s married to actor and director John Krasinski, singing has always been a deeply personal experience. That’s why she feels so self-conscious about performing in front of others. “It’s something that I’ve always kept to myself,” she said. “It’s just not something I feel comfortable sharing with a room full of people.” This admission might come as a surprise to fans who’ve seen her in other singing roles, like Into the Woods. But Emily is quick to point out that she didn’t take on those roles lightly.

After all, Julie Andrews had already made the role legendary with her unforgettable performance in the original film. “I didn’t want to impersonate Julie Andrews,” Emily explained. “What she did was so special and should be treasured. I didn’t want to butcher it.” Instead, Emily decided to bring her own unique spin to the character, while still paying homage to the original.

Director Rob Marshall’s Confidence in Emily

Even though Emily may have felt some nerves about singing in front of the cast and crew, director Rob Marshall was certain that she was the perfect choice for the role. “Rob basically said, ‘If you don’t want to do this with us, we are going to find something else, because we won’t do it if you don’t want to,’” Emily revealed to Vogue in its December issue. Rob was so confident in Emily’s abilities that he told her “there wasn’t even a possible other choice” for the part. That’s high praise coming from a director who’s known for his work on films like Chicago and Into the Woods.
