Glenn Close, a Hollywood icon whose career dates back to 1975, recently opened up about her journey in the entertainment industry. Now 71, the legendary actress admits there are a few things she wishes she had done differently in her younger years. Her reflections provide a candid glimpse into the challenges and growth of a career spanning decades.

At the Australian Academy Awards, Glenn Shares Her Insights

Glenn Close, ever the candid and thoughtful artist, shared her thoughts at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards held at Skybar. When asked what advice she would give her younger self, she revealed, "Well, you see, I started in theater. I was immersed in theater for six years before I ever stepped into my first movie. Movie auditions, though, are a whole different ballgame compared to theater auditions. They can be much more intense and challenging." The actress went on to say, "I remember attending one audition… and the question that kept coming to mind was, what would I say to my younger self? It's a tough one because we’ve had so many discussions lately, especially within the context of the Me Too movement, about how things have changed and what we’ve learned."

Glenn elaborated further, "It's not necessarily about dealing with abuse—it's more about the mental gymnastics you put yourself through to get it right. You’re so focused on perfecting the audition that any disruption can throw you off. It's not good technique, but it happens. Suddenly, everything you’ve prepared goes out the window, and you’re left feeling like you’ve failed."

A Personal Moment: Advice for Young Artists

Glenn continued her conversation, sharing a deeply personal moment from her past. "I think the advice I would give to my younger self would be to try to relax and breathe as much as possible. Don’t feel like you need to deliver a perfect performance in every audition. Instead, throw out some ideas, let the creative process flow," the Golden Globe-winning actress reflected. "But I’ve been in situations where a fellow actor might put their hand on my thigh during a reading, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the scene. It’s not necessarily dangerous, but it creates an uncomfortable dynamic. You start questioning, ‘Why is he doing that? Should I react? What’s going on here that I don’t understand?’"

She added, "It’s happened to me. And looking back, I wish I had been more assertive. I wish I had said, ‘Why are you doing that?’ It’s important for young actresses today to be aware of these situations and know that they deserve to work in a respectful environment. We’ve come a long way, but there’s still work to be done."
