If Anne Hathaway were trying to lose a friend in 10 days, she might have succeeded with someone else. But not with Matthew McConaughey. The star of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days recently shared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that Anne, his co-star in Serenity, showed up to his birthday party a day late. And guess what? No hard feelings here. Matthew handled it with his usual charm and humor, proving that some friendships can withstand even the most awkward moments.
During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on January 21, the 49-year-old Texas native opened up about the mix-up. "My birthday is on November 4, so we had the party that night. I didn’t notice at first, but the Hathaways didn’t show up," Matthew told host Ellen DeGeneres during the show’s "Burning Questions" segment. He recounted the story with a smile, showing just how laid-back he is about life's little hiccups.
As Matthew continued his story, he described the moment when Anne and her husband, Adam Shulman, finally arrived. “The next day, I woke up still in my robe around 5:00 p.m., which was the same time we had started the party the day before. Suddenly, the doorbell rings. It’s Anne! They had a bottle of wine, balloons, a gift, and I just said, ‘Great! Come on in.’” Matthew’s laid-back attitude truly shines through here. Even though they were a day late, he welcomed them with open arms, proving that a good friend doesn’t hold grudges over small things.

And believe it or not, Matthew didn’t send Anne and Adam home empty-handed. After opening the bottle of wine and pouring everyone a glass, he finally broke the news to them. “You do know, my birthday was yesterday,” he told them with a grin. Instead of awkwardness, the trio laughed it off and ended up partying until 2:00 a.m. the next day. “My birthday party needed to be two days,” Matthew joked, showing that sometimes life’s best moments happen when plans go awry.
Matthew and Anne became close friends while filming their new movie, Serenity, which hit theaters on January 25. The film also stars Diane Lane, another Hollywood legend whom Matthew admitted to having a crush on when he was younger. “I told her about my crush, first thing too,” the actor confessed to Entertainment Tonight in early January. “I said, ‘Do you know how long I’ve had a crush on you, Diane? Since [she starred in] Lonesome Dove.’ I told her straight up!” Matthew’s honesty is refreshing, and it seems like Diane took it in stride, adding to the fun and camaraderie on set.
