In 2016, the music world lost a beloved figure when Sir Tom Jones' wife, Melinda Trenchard, tragically passed away from lung cancer. Now, the legendary singer is opening up about the experience, revealing how deeply it affected him and even admitting that he once blamed himself for her death. Let's dive deeper into Tom's journey through grief and how he’s found solace in music.
The 78-year-old singer recently spoke candidly to the Daily Mail about the guilt he felt after his wife’s passing. Tom revealed that every time he sings their favorite song, Bob Dylan’s “What Good Am I,” he can’t help but reflect on what might have been. “The song is about someone who turns their back and someone who is not seeing what is really happening,” Tom explained. “As time went on, it started to mean so much more. It’s like, ‘Why couldn’t I have stopped it?’”
Tom shared how he wrestled with feelings of blame and regret in the wake of Melinda’s passing. “I was reading into the lyrics thinking, ‘Jesus Christ, was I partly to blame? Should I have woken up before?’ I thought, ‘What could I have done?’” he confessed. He admitted, “I couldn’t really have done anything because by the time we found out it was too late, so there’s not a lot you can do. But then you start to think, ‘What if I had forced her to go to the doctors?’ Because she didn’t go. You think, ‘Shit, maybe I should have insisted she see a doctor.’”

Despite the weight of his grief, Tom revealed that music became a lifeline for him. “I got some of my musicians together, and that was the first step,” he said. “Singing has really helped me process everything. Time is a healer.” He also reflected on the bittersweet reality of growing older, noting, “Another thing about getting older that I don’t particularly enjoy is losing friends. But the great thing about continuing to do something you love is that you start to make new ones.”
