Here’s the deal: just hours before Kathie Lee Gifford tearfully announced her departure from the Today show after an incredible 11-year run at NBC next spring, something a little awkward happened. Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo took to social media to call out Kathie Lee and her co-host Hoda Kotb over a misleading headline on the morning show’s website on Monday, December 10. It wasn’t exactly the warm farewell Kathie Lee might have been hoping for.
Let’s rewind. Ellen Pompeo, 49, had recently appeared on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook Watch show, Red Table Talk, where she opened up about her experiences raising three biracial children. In the conversation, Ellen also revealed that she hasn’t spoken to her Grey’s Anatomy co-star Patrick Dempsey since 2015. But here’s the kicker—instead of focusing on the important and heartfelt conversation about race and parenting, Today decided to highlight the angle about Patrick Dempsey in their article’s headline.
When NBC promoted the story via the @KLGAndHoda Twitter account with the caption, “@EllenPompeo and @PatrickDempsey haven’t spoken since he left Grey’s Anatomy,” Ellen wasn’t exactly thrilled. In fact, she fired back with a witty and pointed comment: “Hey, here’s a suggestion!! Maybe all of you over there lay off the booze and pay attention to the real conversation that took place?” Oof. Burn.

After sitting down with Jada Pinkett Smith, Ellen took to Twitter to express her gratitude for the meaningful conversation. She wrote, “I was humbled when @jadapsmith asked me to come to have a discussion about race. I by no means walk in anyone else’s shoes, only my own. I was open and honest about my experience and come from a place of love with no fear about having difficult discussions. Thank you to the whole family.”
During their heart-to-heart, Ellen, who shares kids Stella Luna, 9, Sienna May, 4, and Eli, 1, with husband Chris Ivery, revealed to Jada that one of her daughter’s friends once didn’t believe she was Stella’s mother because of their different skin tones. “My challenge with raising brown children is figuring out how much to tell them and how much to leave unsaid. A couple of weeks ago, I had some friends over to the house, little girls of color, and one of the little girls came in, and I introduced myself, saying, ‘I’m Stella’s mom,’ and she looked at me like she was almost scared, and then she went right to Stella and said, ‘That’s your mom? I thought that was your mom,’” Ellen explained, referring to the kids’ nanny.

“The little baby looked like she was scared of me. That just breaks my heart. That’s why that experience of being in my house and meeting me was good for her, to see that not all white people are what you think,” Ellen continued. It’s clear that Ellen is deeply committed to creating a world where her children can feel seen, heard, and valued.
