Divorce Doesn't Mean Distance: The Story Behind the Stocking

Gwyneth and Chris were married for over a decade, from 2003 to 2014, before they decided to part ways. They coined the term “conscious uncoupling,” which essentially means splitting up while maintaining respect and amicability. They share two children together, Apple, who’s now in her teens, and Moses, who’s a preteen. In a previous interview, Gwyneth revealed that Chris still has a room in her house for when he visits. “We’re still doing it in our own way,” she explained. So, it makes sense that Chris’ stocking is still part of the family tradition.

Meanwhile, Chris is currently dating actress Dakota Johnson, and Gwyneth tied the knot with Brad Falchuk in September, making her a stepmom to his children, Brody and Isabella, from his previous marriage. In an interview, Gwyneth admitted that blending families isn’t always easy. “With teenage kids, you’ve got to tread lightly. It’s pretty intense, the teenage thing. I’ve never been a stepmother before. I don’t know how to do it,” she confessed. Despite these challenges, it seems like they’re navigating their blended family with grace.

Co-Parenting Like Pros

Gwyneth and Chris clearly have a handle on co-parenting. In a 2016 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gwyneth opened up about their parenting style. “You have to constantly let go. You have to let go of old ideas, old resentments. You have to put the kids first, which I think people have the idea of that, but then oftentimes, you struggle with it,” she shared. She went on to explain that even though their relationship has changed, they still focus on what they love about each other. “If you once loved the person enough to have kids with them, you have to focus on what you still love about them and what’s beautiful about them and all the good aspects of your relationship. You still want a family, you’re just not in a couple.” It’s clear that their unique approach to parenting is paying off, and they’re doing an amazing job at it.
