Picture this: Terri Irwin, the fearless woman who captured the heart of the legendary Steve Irwin, had no plans to have kids when they first tied the knot. But life, as it often does, took an unexpected turn. In a recent heartfelt interview with People, Terri opened up about how Steve eventually convinced her that raising a family was the next chapter in their wild adventure.
Back in the day, when they were just starting out, Terri recalled Steve saying, “I’m just an action man. I don’t know how we would ever have kids.” At the time, Terri wasn’t too fussed either way. But after nearly six years of marriage, Steve walked in one evening with a spark in his eye and declared, “We’ve got to have children! Who do we leave all this to? Who will carry it on?” Terri was skeptical, responding, “Just because you have kids doesn’t mean they’re going to want to do what you do.” But Steve was certain. “Oh, they will. They definitely will,” he said with the confidence that only he could muster.
Steve’s gut feeling turned out to be spot on. Once Terri came around to the idea, the couple welcomed their first child, Bindi Irwin, now 20, in 1998. Five years later, their son Robert Irwin, now 15, joined the family in 2003. Today, Terri and her two kids are the stars of the Animal Planet show Crikey! It’s the Irwins, continuing the legacy that Steve started.

For Bindi and Robert, growing up at the Australia Zoo wasn’t just a job; it was their life. “Since we were tiny, [the zoo has] been a part of who we are,” Bindi reminisced fondly. Robert echoed her sentiments, saying, “After school, I’ll go around on my scooter and jump in with the tortoises to say g’day or wrangle some snakes.” Just as Steve had envisioned, his children developed a deep passion for wildlife conservation, carrying on his mission with the same enthusiasm and love for animals.
“Every day is a new adventure,” Robert said, capturing the essence of their family life. Meanwhile, Bindi has been embarking on her own adventures with her boyfriend, Chandler Powell. “We just love traveling together and working in the zoo,” Chandler shared. “We’re enjoying life!” It’s clear that the Irwin legacy isn’t just about taking care of animals—it’s about living boldly and passionately, just like Steve taught them.
