Ellen Pompeo Talks About Staying On 'Grey's Anatomy'

Let’s talk about a woman who’s been lighting up our screens for years—Ellen Pompeo! You know her as Meredith Grey from the beloved ABC show, Grey’s Anatomy. Well, it seems like Ellen might not be ready to hang up her scrubs just yet. Even after all these seasons, she’s still finding reasons to stick around, and honestly, who can blame her?

In a recent chat with TV Line, the 49-year-old star opened up about her thoughts on possibly continuing with the show. “I’ve been saying for a while now, ‘I’m ready to move on and I want to stop the show before the ratings drop.’ But here’s the thing—those ratings just won’t go down!” Ellen explained during an interview on January 16. “They might dip a little, but the fact that we’re still ABC’s top-rated series is truly incredible. It’s such a cool feeling to be part of a show that keeps delivering in this peak TV era.” It’s easy to see why Ellen would want to stay in a place that’s been so good to her, right?

Why Staying Makes Sense for Ellen

“It’s a pretty sweet gig, honestly,” Ellen admitted to the outlet. “I genuinely enjoy my role here. While the idea of something fresh and new is definitely appealing, the reality is that I have three kids to think about. I don’t want to be traveling all over the place, leaving them behind. The last thing I want is to become a circus performer, living out of hotels. Plus, the network and studio keep sweetening the deal, making offers that are just too good to pass up.” Ellen and her husband, Chris Ivery, are raising their three children—Stella, 9, Sienna, 4, and Eli, 2—and balancing family life with her career is obviously a priority for her.

What About the Future?

Back in September 2018, Ellen hinted that she might be wrapping things up after 15 seasons. “Right now, I’m not quite ready to make any formal announcements about my future with the show, but I do feel like we’ve told most of the stories that we can tell,” she told Entertainment Weekly at the time. “It’s definitely time for me to try something different. I’m actively looking for change.” However, as we all know, things can shift quickly in Hollywood. If you’re a fan of Ellen and Grey’s Anatomy, you’ll be happy to know that the show’s 15th season is extending from 22 to 25 episodes, announced by the network on January 7.
