Lin-Manuel Miranda Gets Emotional After Heartfelt Messages From His Teacher And Chef Jose Andres

Lin-Manuel Miranda is back in Puerto Rico, reprising the iconic role of Alexander Hamilton in the hit musical Hamilton. After a two-year hiatus, he’s once again stepping into the spotlight, bringing his unique blend of history and hip-hop to life. While the applause and accolades pour in from all corners, one message in particular left the star with tears streaming down his face.

A Surprise Message That Hits Close to Home

Recently, the 38-year-old sat down for an interview with CBS This Morning. During the conversation, the hosts decided to surprise him with a heartfelt video message from none other than his eighth-grade English teacher, Dr. Rembert Herbert. The moment was unexpected and deeply emotional for Miranda, who was visibly moved by the gesture.

In the video, Dr. Herbert shared a touching message. “Lin, this is your old English teacher, Dr. Herbert, here,” he said warmly. “I’m sure you didn’t imagine when you were in the eighth grade and set parts of The Chosen to music that it would lead you to where you are today. But congratulations! I’ve heard a lot about what you’re doing in Puerto Rico, and I wish you well in those endeavors and continued great success down there.”

  • Lin-Manuel's reaction was nothing short of heartfelt. “Dr. Herbert’s the reason I’m sitting here talking to you,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “Back in eighth grade, I wrote a musical instead of doing my homework for his class. He told me, ‘You could be good at this, and you should stop hiding in my class. You should be doing this.’ Our high school had a student-written theater club, and Dr. Herbert nudged me in that direction. He changed my life forever with that simple encouragement.”

    Another Emotional Moment

But the emotional rollercoaster didn’t stop there. Another video message, this time from renowned chef Jose Andres, also brought Miranda to tears. “Lin-Manuel, congratulations,” Jose said. “Only you could bring Hamilton to beautiful San Juan, Puerto Rico. Thank you for bringing so much hope to the beautiful American people of Puerto Rico.”

Instead, he chose to stay in Puerto Rico, where his tour was scheduled to wrap up on January 28. In a video message to fans, he explained, “Hello, Ryan [Seacrest]! Hello, world! Hello, Golden Globes! I am so sorry I can’t be there. I am thrilled to be nominated and honored to be part of such a wonderful group of nominees, but I’m in Puerto Rico, playing Hamilton in a production that we’re opening here. Our goal is to raise as much money as possible for artists and artistic organizations still struggling to recover in the wake of Hurricane Maria.”
