It’s hard to forget the emotional shock that swept across the nation when we learned of Senator John McCain's passing in August 2018 after a valiant battle with cancer. For his family, especially his daughter Meghan McCain, the loss was deeply personal. Recently, the outspoken co-host of The View sat down with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live to reflect on her father’s funeral and the profound impact it had on her life.
During the deeply moving service for Senator McCain, Meghan, then 34, faced the daunting task of delivering a speech in front of a sea of faces that included friends, family, and even past presidents. Speaking candidly with Andy, she revealed just how challenging that moment was for her. “I can never do anything like that again, ever,” Meghan confessed. “It was so intense. I’ve never taken drugs, but it felt like being on them. You just look out and there’s every president, every notable figure.”
As she walked up to deliver her speech, Meghan admitted to feeling overwhelmed. “I couldn’t believe my father wanted me to do this,” she shared. “I really wanted to be in the moment. It was the best thing I’ve ever done in my life, but also by far the hardest and worst.”

Meghan also opened up about the difficulties of returning to television after her father’s passing. “At first, I didn’t think I could come back to New York,” she confided in Andy. “I didn’t think I could ever see someone like you again. I didn’t think I could appear on a fun show again. I was so heartbroken and felt like I was in a dead state. So I’m really happy just to be here and alive.”
She expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support her family received from the American public. “America’s support for my family, I think you’re not going to see that again for generations,” Meghan remarked. “It was incredible, and I’m still grateful for it. It really helped me get through some of the darkest days.”
Among the many friends and family who have supported Meghan during this difficult time, one person stands out as a pillar of strength. “I probably wouldn’t be here without Joe Biden,” Meghan revealed. “I don’t know if I would have really survived it without him. We obviously disagree politically, and if he runs for president, I might have to quit The View because I can’t say anything bad about him. I don’t think I could do it.”
