Meghan McCain Opens Up About Life Without Her Dad, Senator John McCain

Hey there, friend. Let me tell you a story that might tug at your heartstrings. It's only been four months since the passing of Senator John McCain, a man whose legacy has touched countless lives around the globe. While time moves forward for all of us, the McCain family carries a loss that will never fade. Recently, John's daughter, Meghan McCain, shared some deeply personal thoughts about her dad's absence, and it's a moment that hits home for anyone who's ever felt the void left by a loved one.

Meghan McCain Shares a Heartfelt Thanksgiving Memory

Meghan, who's 34 now, posted a photo on Instagram that takes us back to one of her dad's favorite holidays—Thanksgiving. She writes, "For some reason, I cried yesterday when I realized I'll never see you rush downstairs again, just like you always used to do in the Capitol. It's a strange thing to get upset about, isn’t it?" Meghan goes on to describe her dad's signature way of walking down the stairs. "You were always in such a hurry, and because of your knee, you had this little canter-hop. It was so entertaining to watch, and honestly, I think you might've been the only person in the world who moved down a staircase like that."

For some reason I cried yesterday at the realization that I’m never going to see you rush downstairs again like you always used to do in the capitol. It’s a strange thing to get upset over. You were always in a hurry and would walk down with this almost canter/hop because of your inability to bend your knee. It was always entertaining to watch and it occurred to me that you might be the only person in the world that moved down a staircase like that. I’m still waiting for you to call me on my phone, I’m still waiting to get on a flight to meet you for Christmas, I’m still waiting to be woken up from this bizarre nightmare/coma that was the last year watching what happens to a person who fights glioblastoma. I’m still waiting for a lot of things and guess I probably will be for the rest of my life… 113 days.

The Waiting Game: Life Without Her Hero

In her post, Meghan opens up about the lingering sense of waiting that comes with losing someone so close. "I’m still waiting for you to call me on my phone, I’m still waiting to get on a flight to meet you for Christmas, I’m still waiting to be woken up from this bizarre nightmare/coma," she writes. She reflects on the past year, watching her dad battle glioblastoma, and how it feels like she's been stuck in a dream that refuses to end. "I’m still waiting for a lot of things and guess I probably will be for the rest of my life… 113 days," she adds, marking the time since her dad's passing.

She continues, "You’re omnipresent in my life, heart, and mind, Dad, and it still doesn’t feel real that you aren’t here. I try to remind myself that the intensity of the pain of missing you is important because it’s a reminder of how my love for you was so incredibly strong. That the pain I carry is the trade-off I made for loving someone so purely, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it, even now. I love you forever. Stay with me."

John McCain's passing came just a few months before another iconic political figure, George H.W. Bush, also passed away in November. At the time, Bush's granddaughter, Jenna Bush Hager, shared her thoughts: "He taught me and my family about service, family, decency, the power of gentle words, and a beautiful heart. I will miss him desperately, but I’m so happy that he and my grandmother are back together." These words remind us of the lasting impact that leaders like John McCain and George H.W. Bush have on their families and the world.
